Homework:
1. Do the same for Surat Al-Falaq
2. Explain the difference between Hallal, Sunah, Macrooh and Haram.
Solution of Last Week’s Homework
Kids had some questions that they asked me.
The first question is about lying. Are we allowed to say other than the truth and it doesn’t count as a lie?
The answer is there are three situations where we can say other than the truth and it is not a lie
There is a special case where saying other than the truth is not forbidden, but it is not recommended. It the case of jokes and fiction stories
The second question was about Hijab. Kids were asking if Hijab is required in Islam or is it just a tradition. The answer is that Hijab is required and there three Ayat in the Quran that mandates the Hijab
1. The first Ayah is Ayah 31, in Surat Al-Noor (Surah 24) This Ayah specifies a long “Khimar” that is long enough covers the chest area. It also lists who are the relatives that can see you without Hijab. Note that the Ayah specifies “Khimar” which is Arabic word for head cover.
2. The second Ayah is Ayah 60, in Surat Al-Noor (Surah 24). It specifies who are exempted from Hijab. The Ayah says that the old women who are too old to marry can take of their Hijab provided that they display no decoration. The Ayah also says that it is better for them to keep their Hijab even if they are old.
3. The third Ayah is Ayah 59 in Surah 33. The Ayah specifies a long “Gilbab” that is long enough to cover all the way down. Note that the Ayah specifies “Gilbab”, which is the Arabic word for a dress that is wide enough not to show the contours of the body.

Background:
We are learning how to understand Surat Al-Nasr. The overall meaning of the Surah is that at the time of victory we thank Allah and seek his forgiveness. The question here is that we understand why we must thank Allah at the time of victory, but why ask for his forgiveness in this particular situation? The answer is that the human always feels pride at the time of victory. This pride makes him/her feel that they deserve some credit in making the victory happen. This feeling is triggered by the Shitan because Allah is the one who gets all credit and we get no credit at all. We seek the forgiveness of Allah from our failure to deny ourselves all credit and referring the entire credit to Allah SWT.
Continue doing the same in Surat Al-Lahab. Surat Al-Lahab basically takes about the punishment of Abo Labab and his wife in hell and relates this to what they have done in this life. Allah gives the punishment from the same kind as the evil deed. Abo Lahab said to the Prophet SAW “may your hand be ruined” and Allah will ruin his hand in hell. His wife used to throw ignited firewood sticks on the Muslims when they went for public demonstration to the Kaba to disperse the Muslims and end their demonstration. She will be gathering this wood in hell fire and she will have a rope around her body similar to the one she was using to gather the firewood sticks in this life.

Today we will learn how to identify verbs in Surat Al-Alaq (Iqra), their kind and to whom they refer.
First let us learn the different kinds of verbs
Then let us apply to Surat Al-Alaq
Here we are giving an example to illustrate how Allah is feeding us. The example is for a father who lives in New York and sending an Eid gift to his son in San Jose. The son doesn’t see the father sending the gift but what he sees is the mail person giving him the gift. Should he thank the father for the gift or should he thank the mail person. Allah sends us food through farmers. We see the farmers giving us the food (like the mail person) but Allah is the one who actually sent the food.

Here we are trying to learn the composition of sentence in a simplified way just for the purpose of being able to understand little bit of the Quran.
Noun sentences is made of Mobtada (subject) + Khabar (description, information or news about the Mobtada).
Let us now apply these principles to Surat Al-Shams

Notes:
We continue to learn the expressions in Surat Al-Tin.
Here we are learning about what the pronouns refer to.
Now we are learning about the expression of saying, the wisest wise, the tallest tall, the shortest short, …etc in the Surah
Now we are learning the exception expression in Surat Al-Tin. Allah in Ayah 6 gave the exception to everything that was said before in Ayat 1 to 5.
Then Allah is ending the Surah with a rhetorical question. When we read this rhetorical question, we say answering the question “Indeed He Is”
Now we are learning about the verb, subject and object sentences in the Surah
This is an example where the verb, subject and object are all in one word.

explanation of the Surah before going into the pronouns.
The letter WAW is the letter used in the Arabic language to swear. It also means AND
Allah is swearing by four things. Human swear to assure that they are saying the truth but Allah swears for a different reasons.
One of the reasons is to highlight the greatness of the thing that Allah has sworn by. This greatness may be known or unknown to us.
The important message comes right after the thing(s) that Allah is swearing by, which in this case are the following
Now we play the game between the two teams in the class by asking questions about the referrals in the Ayat as follows
When Allah uses WE to refer to himself, this is called the Royal We.

Notes: It is about the Vocab of Surat Al-Falaq
The Surah is about seeking the
Protection of Allah against four things. Today we will address one of them,
which is the envy eye.
People misunderstand the Hasad (Envy Eye) and they have superstitious believes about
Hasad. They hide things and lie
thinking that this is the way to fight the envy eye. This is false. This causes
a lot of social problems. If you are paranoid about Hasad,
just read both Surat Al-Nas
and Surat Al-Falaq and you
are guaranteed Allah’s protection from the worst envy eye you can ever imagine.
Lying and hiding cause a lot of resentment and social problems because people
take it as an insult. On the other hand, when you mention something good about
someone, always say “Masha’a Allah”.
Another thing is that you can envy
yourself or your loved ones. This is none sense because Hasad
has to come with hate and evil desire that you lose what you have, and no one
hates himself or loved ones or have ill wishes towards them.
Jealousy is okay as long as it
doesn’t come with evil wishes that the others will lose what they have. It is a
nature human feeling and it is not recommended because it makes us belittle
what Allah gave to us by unfair comparisons. We don’t see the blessings that
Allah gave to us and we only see what we are not given.
The jealousy that Prophet Mohamed SAW
has ordered us to have is jealousy that the other knows more Quran, or do more
good deeds than us. The companion of Prophet Mohamed SAW used to have a lot of
this kind of jealousy.
The basis for this definition is the Hadeeth of the Prophet that says “Hasad
is the evil wish that the others lose the blessings that Allah gave to them”.
